The Bureau of Food Protection identifies and documents conditions in Salt Lake County food service establishments that may lead to foodborne illness. Action is taken to remediate hazardous conditions. The Salt Lake Valley Health Department's goal is to prevent the spread of foodborne disease. The Health Department is a useful resource for the public and for food service operators to learn how to prevent foodborne illness. The Bureau of Food Protection's purpose is accomplished by performing the following functions:

  • Conducting an inspection program and responding to complaints in accordance with recognized guidelines. Enforcement action is initiated when needed.
  • Providing educational opportunities for permit holders and food workers such as food handler cards and information on Manager Certification.
  • Performing plan reviews to advise establishments that are under construction of requirements such as where hand washing sinks should be located.
